Namun suatu hari mereka menemukan bahwa ternyata Ipang adalah anak adopsi dan Nugi yang tumbuh dari keluarga pecah (Ibunya bercerai ketika masih kecil), menemukan ternyata ayahnya (diperankan Barry Prima) adalah seorang transeksual. Ada pula Sandra, yang kemudian karena suatu peristiwa mengancam persahabatan Nugi dan Ipang.

Menurut Avianto, sutradara film ini, Realita, Cinta dan Rock'n Roll adalah "film tentang bagaimana anak muda menyikapi dunianya, keluarganya, cintanya, dan mimpinya."

Tanggapan kritikus 

Realita, Cinta dan Rock'n Roll mendapatkan tanggapan yang baik dari para kritikus film. Harian KOMPAS menulis, "Upi mengalirkan kisah begitu lincah, ringan, dan tak njelimet. Kadang penuh tawa, kadang ada keharuan yang sulit untuk dibendung. Konflik tiga tokoh utamanya dihadirkan berimbang sesuai porsinya." Sementara layarperak.com berpendapat bahwa "film ini seperti lorong hitam yang perlahan-lahan menyingkap tirai-demi-tirai rahasianya. Penonton diberi kejutan demi kejutan yang tak terduga
